5 tips to help you focus at work
Are you having trouble concentrating at work? Everyone faces this obstacle at one time or another, but with a little planning and organization, it is easily moderated. Below are five tips for maintaining your focus to help you stay on top of your workflow:
- Plan your day. When it seems like you have a million things to do, there’s nothing like a task list sitting next to you to keep you focused and headed in the right direction. Write down everything that you need to accomplish, from highest to lowest priority, and keep the list close as a reminder of what needs to be done. This way, you’ll feel like you are making headway every time you check something off your list
- Turn big jobs into smaller actionable steps. Broad tasks or high level goals that have no clear start or end point destroy focus. Clearly identifying a path for getting started and the end result your desire can help you map out the steps to take in between. This can also save hours and hours in wasted efforts.
- Make boring tasks fun. Every job has a certain amount of repetitive or boring tasks to contend with. Yet the more you try to avoid them, the more they pile up, which can have a negative affect on your morale. Why not try making them fun? See if you can set new records for getting them done faster and more efficiently, and reward yourself when you do. You may find you are looking forward to these tasks instead of the opposite.
- Take coffee or walking breaks. Working too long without taking a break can make you feel a little stir crazy. Sometimes the best solution is stepping away from your desk and having something to drink or taking a walk. Once back at work, you’ll be able to pick up where you left off with renewed energy and perspective. Tried to avoid distracting others&emdash;they may be in a state of flow even though you aren’t.
- Limit your distractions. It may be obvious that distractions aren’t helping your focus, but do you actually cut them out? It can be tempting to keep e-mail alerts on and to answer every call that comes your way, but in the end, this is only preventing you from concentrating. Instead, try to answer e-mails and calls at scheduled times, and request that people don’t interrupt you when you’ve got a lot of work on.
Remember, when it comes staying focused, maintaining a positive outlook and being consistent with your work habits will always keep you moving in the right direction.
