Find Your Inner-Buddha without Spending a Dime

Stress is an insidious and destructive force that disguises itself in various unexpected forms. Fortunately, there are things we can do to combat this vile and unwelcome guest. Better yet, there are a number of completely free destinations to help you achieve a Zen-like state right here in Salt Lake.
Memory Grove
This park has fantastic trails and endless locations for a quick meditation (like the Harbor of Beauty Pond). This relatively small but beautiful park almost looks as if it was created by the gifted hands of famed renaissance artist Michelangelo himself. Magnificent marble monuments pay tribute to soldiers who died serving our country. A visit to this bucolic park is not only truly relaxing, but also remarkably humbling.
International Peace Gardens
The International Peace Gardens have endured a good amount of wear and tear over the years, but still remain a beloved getaway for those looking for a day of tranqility and relaxation. At its pinnacle, the International Peace Gardens housed a beautiful assortment of special plants from numerous foreign lands, including Magnolia trees from Switzerland, Alpine Edelweiss from Switzerland and over thirty types of Swedish Lilacs. Today, the park is graced with many fragrant and beautiful local varieties of flowers, which greatly aid in promoting a sense of serenity and peace. Thankfully, a plan has been put in place to renew the garden to its once proud glory.
Ensign Peak
Tucked away in the quiet neighborhood just behind the State Capitol building is the trailhead for Ensign Peak. The peak sits atop the Salt Lake valley and overlooks the city. Worried about breaking a sweat? Have no fear: you can hike the first half of the trail to the lower peak in about five to ten minutes. When you make it all the way to the top of the trail, you’ll discover a calm and utterly relaxing seat high above the city. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a scenic sunset, or just want to breathe some fresh air and clear your head, the winding path to Ensign Peak is an uplifting experience you don’t want to miss.
Tea Grotto
Looking for a bit of Zen with a subtle taste of faraway lands? The Tea Grotto downtown is the place of peaceful, calm dreams. Stop by and experience the sounds, smells, and tastes of true happiness, from soothing melodies and meditation chimes, to teas and treats from around the world. The Tea Grotto even offers free tea tastings on Saturday afternoons, so you don’t have to pay a dime to relax and be at one with yourself – or with a friend.
Salt Lake City Public Library Rooftop Gardens
Ever wanted to get away from the never-ending bustle of the city, but didn’t want to actually leave? The rooftop gardens at the Salt Lake City Public Library downtown offer a quick and easy Zen fix. Placed on top of the public library – accessible through both inside and outside steps or via an indoor elevator – the rooftop gardens are a great way to get a beautiful view of the city, from within the city. Not only are the views inspiring, but the rooftop is just high enough to drown out most of the city noise, and allows you to feel as though you’ve gone far enough from the bustle to reset and rewind a little.
