The Power of Self-Propelled Communication

Last year, I attended the TEDx conference at the University of Utah where one of the speakers discussed optimal communication channels for the workplace. In addition to ruling out IM as an effective (yet efficient) communication platform, the speaker mentioned that most employees won’t walk further than the length of a school bus to have a conversation at work. It’s kind of like going to the gym—it’s just not going to happen if you have to drive across town.

My first thought was: “uh-oh.” Our office space, while awesome, is kind of like that old house in your neighborhood that’s had one too many expansions. There’s a room/seat for everyone, but does it really make sense to walk through the bathroom to get to the kitchen? OK, so it’s not that bad, but we are working with a space designer to revamp and reorganize in an effort to limit the distance and walls between teams that need frequent communication. Efficiency, after all, is one of our core company values.

Until the redesign is complete, we’re relying on the next best thing: SCOOTERS!

While most employees may not walk the distance of a school bus, we have found that most are more than happy to ride there on a scooter. We’ve had scooters at CLEARLINK since we moved into our current space three years ago. Despite some dents made in walls, tire marks on our concrete floors, and the occasional female who crashes whilst trying to master her scooter-riding skills in heels, we’ve found that scooters break down the barriers to travel.

Check out our newest group of employees who received the gift of speedy communication today!
